The tactics triangle
Three styles, one circle: Gegenpressing beats possession, possession beats counter, counter beats Gegenpressing. Counter and you attack noticeably harder — get countered and you run into the knife.
The rules
| Style | Beats | Loses to | Ideal formation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gegenpressing | Possession | Counter | 4-3-3, 3-4-3 |
| Possession | Counter | Gegenpressing | 4-2-3-1, 3-5-2 |
| Counter | Gegenpressing | Possession | 5-3-2, 3-5-2 |
Counter the opponent and your attack expectancy rises by e^(3/16) ≈ +20.6%; get countered and it drops ≈ −17%. Mirror styles cancel out. Your formation amplifies or dilutes the plan — the table above shows the harmonic pairs.
The scouting report
Before every matchday you see the opponent's likely style — accurate 80% of the time. In the other 20% the opponent deviates to one of the two other styles. Safe strategy: always pick the counter to the prediction (hits 80%). Gambler's variant: deliberately hold back, e.g. when protecting a lead. Every opponent has a fixed base style — Klopp's Dortmund 11/12 presses, Bayern 12/13 plays possession.
The 60th-minute intervention
In key matches (vs the three title contenders home and away, plus the final three matchdays of a living 34-0-0 run) you may intervene once per game:
- All-out attack — your attack +25%, but the opponent gets +20% space. The card to play when behind.
- Fresh legs — clears fatigue penalties and gives +5%/−5% fine-tuning. The safe reset.
- Park it — opponent attack −25%, yours −15%. Wall the lead in.
Fatigue
From the sixth straight win your XI gets heavy legs: −1 to all ratings per further win, up to −5. “Fresh legs” resets the counter. On a 34-0-0 run those interventions are worth gold. Your final coach score is the counter rate — 80%+ earns the master tactician grade. Deeper dive in the tactics guide and tips.
