Formations: 6 roads to a perfect season
Formation is not decoration here: it shifts your attack, defense and possession ratings and decides which playing styles harmonize. Full comparison below.
The overview
| Formation | Mods | Fits | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-3-3 | Att +3 · Poss +2 · Def −2 | Gegenpressing, possession | The classic for dominant football |
| 4-4-2 | all 0 | everything | The honest scale, no weakness |
| 4-2-3-1 | Poss +3 · Att +1 · Def −1 | Possession | Control through the middle |
| 3-5-2 | Poss +4 · Def −3 · Att −2 | Possession, counter | Wing-backs and midfield overload |
| 3-4-3 | Att +5 · Def −4 | Gegenpressing | The gamble: win or die open |
| 5-3-2 | Def +5 · Att −4 | Counter | Concrete, then poisonous transition |
Formation × style = your build
The mods feed directly into each match's expected goals (λ). Two proven builds: 4-3-3 + Gegenpressing — you counter the 7 possession teams in the league and squeeze them with +3 attack. 5-3-2 + counter — you counter the 4 pressing teams, concede almost nothing thanks to +5 defense and sting in transition. Avoid: 5-3-2 with possession (−4 attack kills your build-up) or 3-4-3 with counter (you cannot afford −4 defense when countering requires compactness). More in the tactics system and tips.
Formation and the draft
The slots decide which players count fully: a 3-5-2 needs wing-backs (LWB/RWB — full-backs fit at 85%), a 4-4-2 lives on true wide midfielders (LM/RM). Plan ahead during the draft: in Expert mode 4-4-2 is easiest because its roles are simplest to fill from memory.
